Back to the Wild West
One of the most hotly anticipated games of 2018 is Red Dead Redemption 2. I have to say, I couldn’t be more excited for this game. It has been a long time coming and I honestly can’t wait to see what Rockstar has in store. Following up on what many consider a classic is a daunting task for any developer. But Rockstar is a master of its craft and while the Grand Theft Auto series is their most widely known property, Red Dead Redemption was, in my opinion, its magnum opus.
Set before the events of Red Dead Redemption, players will assume the role of outlaw Arthur Morgan, a member of the Dutch van der Linde gang. The very same Dutch who was being hunted by John Marston in the first game. Unfortunately, public details regarding the game are very scarce as the trailers don’t give away much information in regards to gameplay or narrative. But that’s ok, Rockstar generally releases trailers detailing gameplay and other pertinent details in the months before the release to get the public hyped for their games. They did so for GTA V and also for Red Dead Redemption. Their latest trailer released earlier this week and showed off more of the Dutch van der Linde gang. We even get a glimpse of a young John Marston.
While I am excited for the single-player campaign, I have a feeling that it may feature multiple protagonist’s ala GTA V, I am intrigued to see how Rockstar handles Red Dead Redemption 2’s multiplayer. There is a possiblity that GTA Online could be replaced by a Red Dead Redemption Online and I would be all for it. It would be fascinating as you could create your own gangs and plan heists across the frontier, but it could struggle to match the insanity of GTA online. The sheer amount of support for GTA online is staggering and is still incredibly popular today. If Red Dead Redemption 2 can recreate this level of immersion but with a Wild West feel that would be great. Of course there would be limitations regarding transportation for obvious historical reasons. This is all my speculation of course, but it would be a cool alternative to GTA Online.
Red Dead Redemption 2 drops October 26 for the PS4 and Xbox One.
